I have been toying with the idea of writing a skydiving game for the PC for quite sometime now as i think it has not been done before ( i can't find anything ..apart from a simulation where you actually hang in )

I want it to be a simulation game and not arcade type game, I have allot of ideas for it but as i dont skydive myself (and don't really want to try ) I was wondering if anyone has some free time to chat about skydiving in more details ...please feel free to post what you would like in the game ,

this is some of the things i am planning on doing :

Full physics simulated (air pressure , drag , etc all changing depending on height etc ) so you will be able to do some 30k + dives
As many skydiving moves
Full ground details of landing area etc.
You will see your self in the plane before jumping etc.
Network play ! , allowing formations to be practiced etc (over the net)
Some sort of challage play (flying through hoops on the way down/target landing ?? idea's welcome)

Now to be honest I can see myself not finishing the game without the help of some people who know about skydiving, as i dont know enough to complete it.

So what do people think ? waste of time , would anyone use it ?

thanks for your time

I got 1 of those heavily flopped skydive CDs for my PC. I used it for all of 2 minutes. As an illustration the only well part was they use C130s Otherwise nothin beats hitting the Skies.
I should have loved freedom, I believe, at all times, but in the time in which we live I am ready to worship it.

I have been a avid base/skydiver for about a year now and i have been wishing that someone would make a skydiving game. There is BASE jumping game out that you should take a look at.You might be able to get some ideas from it.The link is to the developers home page.
they have a free demo for download there.
Let me know if you do this i got some experience with 3d modeling, and i would be glad to help. WWW.d3company.com

Hi I just registered on the site to post on this topic heh .

I have the demo Gigga mentioned earlier of BASE by D3. My roommate had the full game for a while but has lost his CD Key or something like that (hes constantly formatting). He has become an avid skydiver with ~60 jumps and I just like doing flips, and may get into it one day myself. I've had a lot of fun playing the demo of BASE, probably spent about 5 hours playing it in the first few days, even though you can only play 1 level. So I agree with Gigga, you should definitely look into it.

After playing BASE, I am craving a really well designed skydiving game that includes the BASE aspect. There is also another game I saw a trailer for thats supposed to be coming out for PS3 called Sky Diving, which looks horrible. It seems to be a DDR type game, where the focus is on doing moves in the air that give you points.

I think a simulation game that tries to be very realistic while giving the player absolute freedom to jump anywhere and do anything would be the most enjoyable, rather than hitting a button that makes the character do cheerleading moves while he freefalls. GTA San Andreas was highly enjoyable solely for the BASE jumping aspect in it.

This turned out to be a little long but I'd thought I'd just give a non-skydiving gamer's view . Hope to see more BASE-like games out in the future.

Pizznau, welcome here I hope you will enjoy the forum.

You gave some valuable points in defining what is important for actually enjoying skydiver games. Something to keep in mind when purchasing/obtaining one

I see the thread is rather old, but has anyone started working on something like that?

I have been playing around with opengl and some physics to the point where I can model gravity and wind resistance (terminal velocity for a single 3d point modeled, basically).

I would really love to work on something like this, but I feel I lack the physics knowledge to model surface/multiple point drag and general dynamics.

I would not mind making it opensource; My general objective is just to be able to simulate and play around with it after built
