I don’t often write about road riding, but due to the fact that the tour season has started, and not so well at that, I thought I would mention it.
Imagine what could have happened to either of these two riders if they weren’t extremely lucky.
Due to bad planning and safety precautions either one of these two could have had a very serious accident, just like the one that happened a couple of days ago to to Spanish rider Pedro Horrilo on Giro d’Italia.

He lost control of his bike on the descent of the Culmine di San Pietro (Summit of St. Peter). The poor man went off the road and feel straight into a ravine. Doctors report he is in an induced coma and on a respirator, with multiple fractured ribs, fractured leg, a broken kneecap, a perforated lung and head trauma. The descent of the Culmine is a very technical one. According to paramedics, he fell more than 60 metres down the ravine before being airlifted by helicopter to a nearby hospital in Bergamo.

I have to agree with Ron who says that the planners of such races should really make sure that there are enough safety precautions to keep the riders safe from pointless accidents such as this.
