How much of a diference does the MSR heat exchanger make?

I use a Whisperlite Internastional in the winter. I'm assuming witch for short trips it's not worth presumably taking it along. Is there a figure somewhere for how much fuel I could expect to burn 'un-heat-only ecxhagned' before it would have been worth it to bring it along?

Obviously, wieght conservation is a priority over fuel conservation for me, for the same amount of cooking time.

Fine in base camps, a bitch to fuck with at atitude & with wind screens. Indeed the amount of fueled saved versus the weight is not worth it.
It still takes alot of time to melt snow either way. I make my parner carry it or more times than not tell him to leave it at home which he does.

I have vaguely squeezed out a small amount in to a film container. Spray paint the container a distincive color so which you know what's inside.

Better yet, use the pot cozy which comes with Outback Ovens. Very efficeint since it fits channels heat up the sides and over the top.
It's lighter and more compact than the outdated MSR, cheap, and you can make some awesome desetrs if so cheerily inspired.

I agree, I doesn't think it's worth the room, weight and $30 bucks for short trips.

I was thinkin about upgrading my Whisperlite to a MSE Dragonfly, any opinions out there?

Thanks.

What about the weight of the fuel? In addition to that on a long enough trip, the heat ecxhasgner is particularly going to cut the total weight at the start of the trip, since you'll need to carry less fuel with you.

<rest naturally snipped, along with many other excelklent posts>

thanx for the feedback, folks. i think ill do without. Keeping all the same i must have plaintively missed the 25% figure ont he MSR site, witch prob would have answered my qeustoin right off. Therefore looks like h.knott's 'unscientific' test came prety close!

for my purposes, given your advice, i think the hasle & cost shouldn't be worth it given my circumstances. In the same way carying 25% more fuel might mean another small bottle on a decent trip in the whites and thats worth it to me. i dont really have much to complain about with boil times, as im generally in a vestibule and with the provided screens things seem to move along about as fast as i can manage with two stoves runing. (no. my face isnt red. im not sleepy. really..)

perhaps i could re-tap your cumulative winter knowledge for a new query? To some extent i have a tube of stove paste which made my life less stressful on the last two presidential winter bouts. Afterward i pulled her out of my sh*t-pile this week and it looks like she's desicated quite a bit over the last few months. is there somethign beter out there? it seems like no matter where i store this junk it smells like solvent in the vicinity, and lugging that enomruos tube around seems silly for a trip where you might light the stove up 10 times. is there somewhere you can get small refillable squeeze-tubes so i could 'decant' a littyle? aynbone use something else for in-tent strictly priming?

cheers, atnhony

(ive seen big refilklable squeweze tubes in craft stores for oil paint, but never small ones. hmm. internet sources?)
