The Leadville Trail 100 Ultramarathon first run in 1983, is an Ultramarathon held annually on trails and dirt roads at high altitude west and south of Leadville, Colorado, through the heart of the Rocky Mountains. The course is difficult, with runners climbing and descending 15,600 feet, with elevations ranging between 9,200-12,620 feet. Because of its difficulty, it is common for less than half the starters to complete the race ahead of its 30 hour time limit. The next edition of the LT100 is set for August 15-16, 2009 starting at 4am on the 15th.

The 2nd version of the El Paso Puzzler endurance mountain bike race is scheduled for February 7, 2009. The course will be 50 miles this year with new single track, better feed zones, the same good post race food, and more racers.
This is what Dave from the Big Dave’s Blogging Adventures writes about it:
The Puzzler is definitely the toughest 50….by far. I can’t wait for this year’s race. I hope that by having the sag vehicles, more people will be willing to give it a shot. Completing a course this tough on your own or for training is more difficult than in a competitive setting. So I’m hoping that more people give it a shot this year.
Minnie Mouse has been rescued from a Lake District fell after breaking her leg while crashing her mountain bike.
The woman dressed as Minnie Mouse an experienced rider in her 30s, was on a festive ‘fancy dress ride’ with Lancaster based mountain bike club The Bogtrotters. The group - which included riders dressed as Dennis the Menace, Shrek, a sugar plum fairy, a pre-op transsexual and a sexy Santa - were riding along Elterwater Common, near Great Langdale, when she crashed her bike, breaking her left ankle.

This is the first I’ve heard of a “fancy dress ride” but it sounds like it might be more well known in the UK (judging by the quote from the spokesman for Langdale and Ambleside Mountain Rescue in the article). If anything this might make you think twice before putting on that bigfoot costume and hitting the trails on your mountain bike - getting costume fur stuck in your chain just might take you down!

Cedar Rapids is the second largest city in the U.S. state of Iowa and is the county seat of Linn County. The city lies on both banks of the Cedar River, 20 miles north of Iowa City and 100 miles east of Des Moines, the state’s capital and largest city.
According to the puncture proof-blog the Cedar Rapids is going to get its crit back. That’s crit as in criterium.
A criterium, or crit, is a bike race held on a short course , often run on closed-off city centre streets. Race length can be determined by a total time or a number of laps, in which case the number of remaining laps is calculated as the race progresses. Generally the event’s duration is shorter than that of a traditional road race — which can last many hours, sometimes over the course of several days or even weeks, as in a Grand Tour. However, the average speed and intensity are appreciably higher. The winner is the first rider to cross the finish line without having been lapped.

Southridge Winter Series presented by Shimano, kicked off this past weekend under surprisingly beautiful conditions! While the rest of the country is under snow, and the majority of California is getting pounded by rain storms, it was surprising to see that the small town of Fontana be perfectly set up for some epic riding!
Approaching the town of Fontana, was a bit nerve racking to many riders as the snowline in the local mountains were surprisingly low. Luckily, Saturday started off calm & beautiful under sunny skies.
Kim Finch writes her report on the Southridge challenge:
It’s almost sad to see the end of another season. This Southridge Racing Challenge was even more exciting with the addition of being the third race of the Triple Crown Series combined. I spent a lot of time of the bike in the prior weeks to this race. I find that out of all the races I have entered the Southridge course is the most technical.
